DEBUNKING What We Know Of Chinese Qixi Valentines Day

TheOhCollective The Oh Collective 2022-01-01

We’ve all heard it… It’s August 14th and QiXi Chinese Valentine’s Day is here. Of course, love is in the air, and we hope all of you lovebirds out there are spending the day surrounded by love and romance (we’re all jealous)! As we celebrate love on this special day, however, we also wanted to propose alternative QiXi festivities—one that involves lots of Oh’ing and self-love, which is equally important!

That’s right, we are actually proposing that our single Gals out there spend today falling in love; with life, with the women around you, and most importantly, with yourself! Today’s article will be about the origins of QiXi and why it is actually a day of self-love rather than romantic love with a partner (although we fully support that too).

The story of QiXi has been handed down for nearly 2 millennia. To most, it is a story of Niu Lang and Zhi Nü falling in love on a bridge of magpies across the Milky Way and has become an iconic love story across China. But did you know? This story actually has more to do with female empowerment than you may think.

Keep reading to learn more about Chinese Valentine’s Day, and why this seventh day of the seventh lunar month is so special. We also share our tips and suggestions for how to spend it falling in love with yourself!

The Story of Qixi

(You can skip this if you have heard it a billion times!)

According to Chinese myth, seven goddesses who lived in heaven secretly ventured to the mortal world one night to do some exploring. The seven sisters were bathing together in a lake when a nearby Cowherd (Niu Lang) spotted one of the goddesses, a skilled weaver who wove colorful clouds in heaven. It was love at first sight for the two, and she stayed behind in the mortal world, marrying the Cowherd (Niu Lang) and bearing two children.

But for a goddess to marry a mortal man was blasphemy, and when the Goddess of Heaven discovered the transgression, she was enraged and ordered Weaver Girl (Zhi Nü) to return to Heaven and resume her weaving duties. Weaver Girl (Zhi Nü) had no choice but to obey and leave, heartbroken.

The Cowherd (Niu Lang)was devastated and could not imagine a life without his beloved. One day, seeing his pain, the Cowherd’s ox began to speak, telling him that if he killed him and wore his hide, he could fly up to heaven and see Weaver Girl (Zhi Nü) again. The ox’s sacrifice reunited the two, but the Goddess of Heaven would not stand for it. She furiously created a river of stars in the sky, separating the lovers for eternity. A flock of magpies, moved by the purity of the couple’s devotion, joined together to form a bridge between the two.

Even the Goddess of Heaven was touched, and she agreed to allow the Cowherd and their children to remain in heaven, to be reunited with Weaver Girl only once a year, on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month.

Although today, couples in China celebrate this special day by going on dinner dates and exchanging flowers and cards, the Chinese used to observe more traditional customs for Qixi. And guess what? It doesn’t involve a partner being by your side…

Some of these popular traditions involved:

Women, usually in the evening of QiXi, showing their dexterity skills by speedily threading a needle under the moonlight.Young women carving exotic flowers, animals, and unusual birds, usually on melon skin.

Women worshipping Zhinü (Weaver Girl) by preparing a table of offerings: tea wine, fruits, red dates, hazelnuts, peanuts, and melon seeds. Playing games or reading poems until midnight. Top that off with some red wine, and you’re set for a girls’ date night unlike any other.

Try spending today re-creating some of these popular traditions with some of your gal pals, and you won’t even think twice about needing a Valentine by your side!

"What Are Some Ways I Can Show Love To Myself?"

I think we can all agree that the most important takeaway from QiXi Valentine’s Day is that love is indeed in the air, and love is so beautiful—and you deserve it. But more importantly, you don’t need a significant other to give you that love. Read for our 5 tips on how to show some self-love not only today but every day:

#1

List Your Qualities

Repeat them to yourself. You are hot, you are smart, and most importantly, you’re that girl.

#2

Speak To Yourself With Love

Affirmations go a long way, and honestly as weird as it sounds to “talk to yourself”, what you speak will come into existence once you truly believe it.

#3

 Reward Yourself

Have you reached a big milestone recently? Or even achieved something small that you feel really proud of yourself for? Spoil yourself with a treat or those shoes that you’ve always wanted. Always celebrate yourself.

#4

Give Yourself A Break

Today especially may trigger a lot of emotions for those who are single or heartbroken. Regardless of what you’re going through—give yourself a break when you need it. Constantly recharge yourself and your energy.

#5

Hydrate, Meditate, Masturbate

If The Oh Collective had its own bible, these words would be printed on the very first page. Enough said!
